Watching four fathers from very different backgrounds compete for top honors \u2014 and $10,000 \u2014 in last night\u2019s Father\u2019s Day segment on Chopped!<\/em>, I came away with three amazing (parallel) thoughts\u2026<\/p>\n

\u2013 Competing for top place (or completing your PhD) doesn\u2019t have to be stressful\u2026 it can even be fun!<\/p>\n

\u2013 Reasons for entering a cooking competition (or a Doctoral program) may be as varied as the dishes that result from a basket of mystery ingredients\u2026 to showcase our talent\u2026 to gain acceptance\u2026 to challenge ourselves\u2026 because of our kids\u2026 to find meaning\u2026 to recover from loss\u2026 to move on in our lives\u2026<\/em><\/p>\n

\u2013 \u201cYou\u2019ll never be the same again after this\u2026\u201d That was the football coach\u2019s conclusion in Round Two, as he and two other contestants waited for the judges to finish deliberating on whom to \u201cchop.”<\/p>\n

He likened their Chopped!<\/em> experience to a rubber band that has been stretched to its limits, and will never again retain its shape.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhatever happens,\u201d he reflected, using the rubber band analogy, the experience has changed him (even though he was eliminated in that round).<\/p>\n

It\u2019s the same in academia. Wherever you are in your academic career \u2014 whether you\u2019re still trying to fulfill course requirements, are in a tenure-track position, or trying to decide whether to get off the academic treadmill \u2014 remember this\u2026<\/p>\n

You\u2019re like a rubber band that has been stretched beyond its limits. Once you\u2019ve chosen the Doctoral route, whatever the consequence, for better or for worse, you\u2019ll be forever altered.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cYou\u2019ll never be the same again after this\u2026\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n

Profound words. Reflect on it.<\/p>\n

To all fathers, wherever you are in your academic journey, spend time with your family\u2026 and have a wonderful Father\u2019s Day!<\/p>\n
